Some time before 1930, Patton Gibson supposedly killed John Spurlock in Lee County, Virginia. This was within a few miles of Hancock County's Vardy community. John Spurlock's sons ended up shooting and killing at least two other Gibson family members, one of whom went to Washington County, Indiana (reason unknown - perhaps to escape retribution???) where he was shot down on the court house steps. Some sources say this feud started over a woman.
